Sheridan Hawks Junior Hockey: Like most other sports, overtime happens in hockey and with the exception of this past weekend, the Sheridan Hawks have been staying away from playing much extra time this season.
The team split home games this past Friday and Saturday at home vs. Rapid City, winning 4-3 in overtime, and losing 5-4 by way of a shootout.
This season the Hawks have had 4 games go longer than 60 minutes, winning 1, losing 2 and lost 1 other in a shootout.
Last year Sheridan had 7 games go beyond regulation, winning 3 of them, losing 2 and lost 2 others in a shootout.
Those losses cost the team points in the standings and they only missed last year’s postseason by 4 points.
Hawks Assistant Coach Mahkai Sparks explains that overtime has not always been beneficial.
The Hawks are off this weekend from competition and will conclude their 10-game homestand on Friday and Saturday, February 7th and 8th against Great Falls.
Sheridan HS Wrestling: There’s about 1 month to go in the season, and both the Sheridan boys and girls are about to find out where they stand compared to the rest of the state.
Both the Broncs and Lady Broncs will have a dual meet at Natrona County and then it’s on to the 2-day Ron Thon Invitational at Riverton, which is considered by many to be a preview of the state meet.
At the Ron Thon, it doesn’t matter what class your school is in, because it’s every team for themselves, whereas at the state meet, teams only go up against other teams in their class.
Bronc Head Coach Tyson Shatto says this weekend’s tournament is one to be taken seriously.
Both the Broncs and Lady Broncs will not be competing at the same time this weekend.
The girls will have the dual at Natrona County today, and then they’ll compete in Riverton tomorrow and Friday.
The boys go to Casper tomorrow, and then Riverton on Friday and Saturday.
University of Wyoming Basketball: The 3-ball not only saved the game for the Wyoming Cowboys, it led the way to victory last night at home vs. Fresno State.
Final score in overtime…83-72.
The Brown and Gold had a 13-point lead with 14 ½ minutes to go, lost it, but then Obi Agbim hit a 3 at the buzzer to force overtime, and then UW took over for good from there.
The Pokes shot 49% for the game, and hit 17 3’s.
Kobe Newton came off the bench to lead Wyoming with 18 points.
Agbim put in 17, Dontaie Allen contributed with 14 and Jordan Nesbitt put in 10.
The Cowboys are now 11-10 on the season, with a 4-6 record in the Mountain West Conference.
UW next plays Saturday at San Diego State.
The Wyoming Cowgirls are back on the court today at San Jose State.
Tip off is scheduled for 7pm and you can hear that game LIVE on Fox Sports 106.3 FM.
Colorado Avalanche Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche lost last night at the New York Islanders 5-2, giving up 4 3rd period goals in the process.
The Avs next play on Friday at home vs. St. Louis.
