Another Sheridan High School alumni (class of 1957) passed away on April 12, 2024, in his hometown of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Joe was born to William (Bill) and Mary Jane Tate (Tipton), on June 2, 1939, in St. Louis, MO, and relocated to Sheridan, WY in 1941.  Shortly thereafter, Joe began his baseball career as a batboy with Sheridan’s American Legion Team, and then he played American Legion baseball throughout his school years. After high school graduation, Joe joined Sheridan’s Army Reserve and spent his time at Fort Leonard, MO. After completing his active duty he returned to Sheridan and attended Sheridan Junior College, then on to the University of Wyoming where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation.

Joe put his degree to good use and worked across Colorado and Nevada as a recreation leader and coach. Throughout that time Joe continued to play baseball, one of Joe’s favorite passions in life.  After a few years, Joe returned to the University of Wyoming and obtained his teaching credential. In 1979 he received a Master of Arts in Education from California Lutheran College.

In 1968 Joe began his teaching career at Curran Middle School in Bakersfield, CA.  He taught English and math as well as coached P.E., and various other sports during his 31 years of teaching in Bakersfield. He also coached at West and North High Schools Boys Frosh Soph Basketball in the Kern High School District. At the time of his retirement, Joe was a Vice Principal at Beardsley School District.

Joe & #39;s greatest achievement and proudest moment were raising his daughter Cali Lynn Tate (Chanty).

Another of Joe’s greatest joys was talking to, and encouraging his grandkids' sports interests in soccer, golf, basketball, football, track and of course baseball. Continuing his passion for sports, Joe moved from baseball to golf and played the links as often as possible. He spent many years participating in golf with the Naab Golf Group in Bakersfield, CA.

In 2002 Joe married Marilyn Tate (McGarvey).  The two embarked on many wonderful RV trips, which always included golf and good friends.  Joe and Marilyn spent many summers in Star Valley, WY in their RV; and in 2018, Joe and Marilyn made the permanent move to Sheridan, WY.

Joe is survived by his wife Marilyn Tate, Sheridan, WY, and her extended family; daughter Cali Chanty and her fiancée Joe Golden; grandchildren Brennen, Kaycee, and Ayden Chanty, all of Corona, CA; sister Nancy Cranford, Sheridan, WY, and her extended family; brother Dan Tate(Rhesa), Bakersfield, CA and his extended family.  He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Amret Chanty (2015) of Corona, CA.  A special thank you is in order for Joe’s good friends David Lee, Bakersfield, CA; Allen Frude, Casper, WY; Dennie Meinke, Bakersfield, CA; and Skip Israel of Sheridan, WY, for their continued support in visiting with Joe and calling him throughout

his end-of-life journey.
