Current snowpack levels in Sheridan County are near what they were from this time last year.
The US Department of Agriculture reports that as of February 1st, the snowpack level for the Tongue River Drainage area is at 103% of last year, while the Clear Creek Drainage was at 134%.
As a whole, the Tongue River valley snowpack level is at 84% of average, while the Powder River valley is at 77% and the Big Horn Basin is at 85%.
Most snowpack levels in western Wyoming are at 90% or greater, while northeast and southeast areas such as the Belle Fourche, Cheyenne River and South Platte are at 60% or below.
Data is collected manually in some areas and via a permanent remote site that transmits snow-water content and precipitation data via satellite link in other areas.
