Two unidentified snowmobilers have died after being caught in an avalanche not far from the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center in Montana, on Monday (December 27th) a group of 4 snowmobilers were riding on the southeast face of Scotch Bonnet Mountain, which is a little bit north of Cooke City.
The area had recently been covered by three feet of fresh snow, on top of the snow that was already there.
It is unknown what caused the avalanche, but approximately 5 feet of snow about 300 feet wide fell and buried two of the snowmobilers.
Rescuers were eventually able to dig the two out, and the Park County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue from Wyoming assisted.
The avalanche center is advising other snowmobilers to avoid steep wind-loaded slopes in the area.
