Ucross Welcomes Sheridan Artist for Fall Session

David Brock
This fall, Sheridan artist David Brock has been awarded with a residency at Ucross. He will be provided with unlimited time, studio space, living accommodations, meals by a professional chef, and a $1,000 stipend.
Brock was born and raised on the Front Range of Colorado, He graduated from University of Northern Colorado with a BA in Painting and Drawing and he received an MFA in 2D Studies from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH.
He is currently the instructor of painting and drawing at Sheridan College and has previously taught at institutions in Wisconsin and Ohio.
Brock’s work, centers around the architecture of the landscape, both grand and small, wild and domesticated. Pared down to the essentials of color and form, these works reflect a cognitive reconciliation with those ofttimes overlooked spaces as a means of self-understanding and grounding. His artwork has appeared in national and international juried and group exhibitions, along with numerous solo shows. He is currently represented by the Nines Gallery in Holland, MI, and the Commercial in Alma, WI.
The Ucross Foundation, now operating at full capacity for the first time since March, 2020, has selected 65 artists from a variety of disciplines from 21 states.
“We are gratified to once again welcome 10 artists at a time to Ucross,” said Ucross President and Executive Director Sharon Dynak. “The artists are able to have the complete Ucross experience, from concentrated work time in studios to hikes in the spacious hills and communal dinners at the School House. We look forward to seeing how our unique combination of solitude and community engages the artists’ creative spirits.”
Each Ucross Fellow receives uninterrupted time and space to create on the nonprofit’s historic 20,000-acre ranch at Ucross. The fall session opened two weeks early this year, in order to expand opportunities for artists after time lost due to the pandemic.
“After a year and a half of pandemic-related isolation and distraction, Ucross allowed me to return to that space of writing with focus and purpose and time,” nonfiction writer P. Carl said at the conclusion of his residency. “I left with a solid start to my next book and new friends I was able to meet in person — not on Zoom. I reveled in the joy of being in the live company of other artists.”
The next call for applications to the artist residency program is currently open, with a deadline of March 1, 2022.
