Defending 4A Girls State Champ Samantha Spielman showed why was just that at the first golf meet of the 2021 season.
The junior scored a 73 and 74 for a total of 147, to finish first for the girls at the 2021 Thunder Basin Invitational in Gillette, winning by 11 strokes.
Senior Katie Jorgenson was 4th with a score of 168, while senior Libby Gardner was 8th with a score of 175, and senior Izzy Laird was 10th with a score of 178.
The scores were more than enough for the Lady Broncs to finish first in the team standings with a 2-day score of 484 (+52), which was 51 strokes better than runner-up Kelly Walsh.
Ella Sanders of Buffalo put in a 2-day score of 241 to finish 23rd.
On the boys side, sophomore Garrett Spielman and senior Alex Sanders finished in a 3-way tie for 7th, with a score of 162 each.
Junior Brock Owings, senior Sean Sanders, and Buffalo junior Keehan Rickett were all 1 stroke behind, finishing in a 3-way tie for 10th, with a score of 163 each.
As a team, the Broncs had identical scores of 325 each day, for a total of 650 (+74), which put them in 2nd, 7 strokes behind first place Campbell County.
After Day 1, Sheridan was in 2nd place, 1 point behind Kelly Walsh, and 4 ahead of Campbell County.
The Camels did much better on Day 2, whereas Kelly Walsh did not.
The Buffalo boys were 7th of 8 teams with a score of 725.
The Bison were the only 3A team at the Invitational.
Sheridan’s and Buffalo’s next golf meet will be the Sheridan Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday, August 18th and 19th.
Big Horn and Tongue River’s golf teams were scheduled to compete at the Upton Invitational on Saturday, August 14th, but it has been postponed to Tuesday, August 17th.
