The COVID pandemic affected a lot of things in a negative way, but when it comes to raising and selling cattle, some good came from it.

Since many school buildings were closed and students were learning from home, many ranchers were able to take advantage of the extra help from their children.

The downside was that many meat processing facilities either shut down or had their work production output reduced, which in turn impacted sales.

Executive Vice President Jim Magagna of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association says Wyoming has caught up on all of that, and there was an extra benefit from within the Cowboy State.

“As meat cases in the big stores started to empty out, people started to look to what they could find closer to home, and so the whole concept of locally produced took on new intensity, new opportunities, I know you’ve got a new plant that just opened here in Sheridan recently that represents some of that.”

This week the Wyoming Stock Growers Association is holding their state convention and trade show at the Sheridan Convention Center.
