Sheridan County School District 1 trustees will consider a change in the district’s calendar when they meet next week, to accommodate a basketball tournament.

School District Superintendent Pete Kilbride said Big Horn High School will host the Northeast Regional Basketball Tournament, to be held Feb. 25-27. Kilbride, who presented the matter to trustees for discussion at a work session earlier this week, said Feb. 25 is a Thursday – normally a school day for students in the district.

Kilbride has asked school trustees to consider not having school on Feb. 25 but, instead, to have school on Nov. 20, which is a Friday. District 1 observes a four-day school week and normally doesn’t hold classes on Fridays.

The change would be district-wide, for schools not only in Big Horn but in Ranchester and Dayton.

Kilbride said the change would still provide the district’s 148 school days while allowing the parking lot at the Big Horn schools to be available to those coming for the basketball games.

Trustees could not act on the proposal at their work session this week, so the matter will come before them when they meet next Wednesday.
