One of the most scenic highways in northwest Wyoming is about to open for the summer traveling season, one week later than its normal opening date.

US Highway 212 over the Beartooth Pass is scheduled to open on Saturday, June 1st.

It was supposed to open on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, but a late spring snow storm passed through the area and dumped up to 6 feet of the white stuff in some areas and an avalanche caused some road damage on the Montana side, thus the opening was delayed.

The highway is normally closed between 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US Highway 212 and Wyoming State Highway 296, to about 12 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana, however the Montana side is now open to Vista Point.

A few miles south of the Wyoming-Montana border, the highway gets up to almost 11,000 feet above sea level.

Beartooth Highway normally closes for the winter season in mid October, because too much snow combined with too little traffic, makes snow plowing efforts on the highway impractical.
