WDH Updates Recommendations as Coronavirus Risk Grows

The Wyoming Department of health has updated their recommendations as the overall risk of transmitting coronavirus continues to be more concerning. In general, the recommendations from the state have included those that one would take to avoid the spread of any respiratory illness such as staying home when sick, covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and washing hands often with soap and water. One thing that is not recommended is the use of facemasks as a general preventative measure. Facemasks should be used by people who are already ill in order to prevent the spread of the sickness.
The current risk in Wyoming is still low and as of Monday, Dr. Alexia Harrist, state health officer and state epidemiologist with the WDH, explained that there have been no reported cases to this point. She did however continue on to say that they believe it is likely the disease will spread the state at some point. Current recommendations on traveling include no nonessential visits to China, Iran, South Korea, Italy, or cruise ships. Older adults and travelers with underlying health issues should consider avoiding situations with increased risk for transmission. The state is also recommending that long term care facilities in Wyoming take steps such as screening of visitors and employees and reviewing their illness prevention plans. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some of which cause the common cold in people and others that circulate among animals.
