Eaton’s Horse Drive Leaves Leiter

The Eaton’s Guest Ranch horses arrived at Leiter on Friday night, May 23. It was the first leg of a three-day journey that takes place each spring between Eaton’s Bar 11 Ranch on Wild Horse Creek at Echeta, to the home ranch near Wolf, Wyoming, outside of Dayton.

On Friday, the horses were pastured near the Leiter Bar and Cafe, and the wranglers enjoyed a supper, slept overnight in the Leiter cabins, and had a buffet-style breakfast to get them ready for their day.

Melaine Thomas Klier, owner of the Leiter Cafe and Bar, talked about the drive coming into Leiter, and how long she has hosted the crew.

Mary Eaton, manager of Eaton’s Ranch, explained about when the drive started.

She added that in the fall, after the guest season is over, they truck the horses from the home ranch to the winter pasture near Echeta.

Eaton’s ranch has been in Mary’s family for over 100 years. Three Eaton brothers, Howard, Willis, and Alden Eaton established the ranch in 1879 near Medora, North Dakota. It is the oldest guest ranch in the United States. In 1904, they outgrew the North Dakota location, and purchased the present ranch near Wolf, Wyoming. Later they purchased the winter pasture at Echeta.

Wrangler Tom Alderson, Jr. who has been helping with the drive for several years, talked about this year’s drive.

The horse herd left Leiter at 7 a.m., and the horses traveled through Clearmont, and turned up the Ulm Road. They will spend Saturday night at Wyaro before heading to Eaton’s Ranch on Sunday.

The Eaton horse drive is an annual tradition on Memorial Day weekend in the Sheridan area, with the horses going past the historic Sheridan Inn early in the morning on their way out to the Eaton Ranch. This year, they will go through Sheridan, up Fifth Street, on Sunday, May 25.
