cvannoyThe Ninth Annual Career Fair was held on Wed., April 26 at the Sheridan College Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome.
There were representatives from many businesses at the fair, from health care to Weatherby Rifles; US Army, Air Force and Space Force; Board Patrol and TSA; Construction firms; the office of US Senator John Barrasso; YMCA and the Best Western Sheridan Center, among many others looking for new hires for a variety of positions. Most were local, but there were a few out of town businesses represented as well. There was something for almost anyone looking for a job or a career.
Karen St. Clair, Sheridan College Academic Advisor, said this year’s career fair attracted 62 business, and it is the largest career fair they have even hosted.
The AAUW, American Association of University Women, a national organization that has been helping women for well over 100 years had a booth at the fair. The AAUW organization is involved in education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects to help women and girls. This is their first year at the career fair.
Jolene Olson Chairman of the Sheridan branch, talked about what they offer.
She added that although many young graduates have worked in fast food or other entry level jobs, their Smart Start course focuses on more professional level job.
They also offer Work Smart course and Olson explained what it offers.
The Sheridan County YMCA is hiring for several positions, and Lynette Barnes, Senior Director of HR & Programs, and Kyle Roberts, Aquatics Director, talked about some of the opportunities open at the Sheridan Y.
Lynette added that the Y camp position’s wages are fairly comparable to other summer youth jobs. The camp is from the second week of June through the second week in August. She said that counselors could work one week or work all summer. Anyone interested can apply in person at the Y or fill out an application on-line.
Roberts said that anyone wishing to be a lifeguard has to be certified, but he offers a lifeguard training course at the YMCA.
Weatherby, Inc, one of the top American rifle companies, relocated to Sheridan in 2019. The company manufactures quality rifles and ammunition here in Sheridan and David Amador, HR Assistant, talked about who they are hiring at Weatherby, Inc.
Michael Houghton of Dick Anderson Construction talked about working in the construction field, and what training they offer.
He added that one of his goals is to talk to the high schools around the area to get the students some preliminary training towards the apprenticeship. He said that the training in the trades and tech fields are necessary.
He said that the tech field offered the type of career where people can explore and grow. He added that if a youngster wanted to take time off between high school and college, and wasn’t sure what they wanted to do, they could work in a field that allows them to make some money while they decide what career path they want to pursue.
One of the health care booths looking for CNA and nurses was the Green House Living, which offers more of a family living experience for the elderly population. At Green House Living, the elders continue to live meaningful, connected lives. Family and friends of all ages feel welcomed by the lively and familiar environment, which allows those precious, inter-generational relationships to thrive without interruption.
