SCSD#3 School Board Discusses School Safety

Cody Ramsay, pastor of the Clearmont Community Church was a guest the April 12 board meeting of the SCSD#3 Board of Trustees.

He spoke to the board as ‘pro-active’ parent about the rash of school shootings happening around the United States, and was wondering if the school could add some additional level of protection for the students. He added that the TAC*ONE training was good, but maybe they needed more than that.

Jennifer Betz, activities director and teacher said that there was state FFA next week, and state art at the same time so kids have to decide. She added about the music students.

Betz also reported that there were maybe 14 high school volleyball players signed up for next fall, and she recommended hiring an assistant volleyball coach.

The board discussed certified salary adjustments and discussed giving employees the option for contributions to HSA in addition to health insurance.

The board approved the resignation of Terri Armstrong, Special Ed paraprofessional, and approved to advertise, interview and hire head high school basketball coach; a K-12 special ed paraprofessional, and half-time elementary teacher.

Christensen talked about letting pre-school youngsters come in join the kindergarten class for a few hours to give them a feel of what school will be like.

He also felt that summer school may be an option for some youngsters. It would have a literacy focus, and he said it would be a hybrid option, and will be offered virtually as well as in person learning.

He talked about making virtual days during the year more valuable with a shorter, more intense time.

Jennifer Betz, teacher talked about her experience with virtual learning during the virtual snow days.

Christensen felt the virtual days were more successful at the secondary level than at the high school level. However, most felt the virtual snow days worked better than having to ‘make up’ the snow day in the spring.

Christensen mentioned the school improvement plan, saying that the district is in great shape, but there are a few gaps. “I want to commend the staff for their work,” he said.
