According to the US Department of State, more than two decades ago, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000, enshrined the United States’ commitment to combating human trafficking domestically and internationally. In 2010, by presidential proclamation, President Barack Obama declared January “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month” and every year since, each president has followed this tradition.

The month gives the nation an opportunity to educate themselves on the issues of human trafficking and a time to listen to and empower victims.

Uprising, a nonprofit based in Sheridan, exists to empower communities, volunteers, and donors to confront human trafficking and exploitation through awareness, education and outreach.

Uprising prevention education coordinator Natalie Perkins and human trafficking survivor Charlie Falkis appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program to bring awareness to National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Bringing awareness to such a heinous crime does not itself have to be a negative experience. Uprising will be raising funds through a BINGO night beginning at 7 p.m. Jan. 11, at Black Tooth Brewery. On Jan. 11, supporters are encouraged to wear the color blue to honor victims and show solidarity.

Perkins alerted listeners to a technique to help raise funds and challenge oneself in the gym.

From age 8 until 20 years old, Falkis was manipulated, coerced and forced into a life of sexual abuse and exploitation. Falkis has been receiving help to heal from a lifetime of trafficking and abuse. He had a special message for anyone who may be in a similar situation.
