Girls on the run

For the third year, Sheridan was the site of a Girls on the run 5K Saturday. Girls in third, fourth, and fifth grade from three Sheridan elementary schools, Sagebrush, Meadowlark, and Highland were among the runners in the Morning Mayhem Halloween 5k Run which started and finished at Thorne Rider Park.

The girls trained for the 3.1-mile run for eight weeks (practicing twice a week). Sagebrush teacher Erica Jensen said the heart of the GOTR program went far beyond physical fitness.

“The 5K is just the finish line we can see, Jensen said. “The real accomplishment is everything the girls have learned along the way. We want them to leave Girls on the Run knowing they are capable of hard things, that they have the tools to overcome challenges, and that success isn’t just about what you accomplish yourself, but how you help others along the way. I hope they carry those lessons with them long after they’ve crossed this finish line.”
