You’ve probably heard the phrase “cowboy up,” and one Sheridan College cowboy did just that in half of a season, to qualify for his first College National Finals Rodeo.

Cowboys and cowgirls earn points based on where they finish at each of the 10 rodeos during the season, (5 in the fall and 5 in the spring) and the top 3 in the standings in each event after those 10 rodeos, are automatically invited to the CNFR in Casper.

When the fall season started last year, saddle bronc rider Joseph Priebe wasn’t a part of the team.

He joined during the winter break, thus he only had half of a season to make an impact, and he did just that.

Priebe placed 4th at the Gillette College rodeo event, 1st at Eastern Wyoming College, did not place at Colorado State, 1st at Casper College, and tied for 1st at UW with team-mate Clancy Glenn.

Going into the final rodeo, he was in 7th place in the overall saddle bronc standings, and the 1st place tie got him into the #3 spot by 20 points, thus he made the cut.

Priebe says he knew what he had to do when the spring season started and didn’t back down from the challenge.

Joseph Priebe

“I wrote down my goals at the beginning of the semester and I knew that if I wanted to make College Finals, I had to keep up on all my goals of everything I do everyday to work hard for that, and when I showed up to the rodeo, whenever I got nervous, I just thought about the work I put in, and I was ready to go. I was blessed with some good draws, so when I showed up, I just trust in the Lord and got right after it.”

Both Priebe and Glenn are guaranteed 3 rides at the CNFR.

They are scheduled to ride Sunday afternoon (June 11th), Tuesday morning (June 13th) and Wednesday night (June 14th).

After that, they have to wait until Friday night to find out if they’re in the top 12, which would put them in Saturday’s championship short-go.
