John Robert Elkins was born January 19, 1974, and passed away July 30, 2024, at the family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains.
John grew up in Sheridan, Wyoming. He moved to Casper as a young adult and worked in the oil field industry for over 25 years. He was diagnosed with ALS in April 2022 and spent his remaining time enjoying his friends and family. John was able to remain in his home and with his loved ones through his entire illness.
Two years ago, he changed his name to John Robert Alvin Elkins lV to honor his father. After that, “lV” became his identity.
John was an avid hunter. He hunted bear, moose, elk, deer, antelope, ibex, duck and turkey in the past few years while fighting ALS. He also loved fishing around the Casper area, ice fishing up north, and taking an annual deep sea fishing trip in Florida.
John made friends wherever he went. He had many friends from all over the country who travelled to make memories with him after his diagnosis. He was loved by everyone and made friends everywhere he went. Whether out for work, leisure, and even therapy, those who met John, quickly loved him and often became friends for life.
John has collected a variety of tattoos in recent years. Each one expressing his personality in someway. Sentimental, sarcastic, and of course the funnier, the better. He has truly left a mark on many loved ones with matching tattoos as well. He could convince people to do anything.
John loved all music genres, as evidenced by his two favorites, Waylon Jennings and Def Leppard. He loved to dance, especially jitterbug.
John is survived by his parents, John and Nancy Elkins; daughter Ashlynn Elkins; sons Brandon Elkins (Chelsea), Chris Parker and Cody Parker, and then there’s Kady Miller his bonus daughter; grandson Rowan ‘lil’ John Elkins; sisters Alyssa (Randy) Jolovich, Kimberly Brown , Heather (Chris) Hayden and Selina (Todd) Nohr; several nieces and nephews; special friends John Devoss, Pamela Large, Jeramy Lucas, Tuke Burgess, and countless others who have continued to make memories with him and help him enjoy life these past two years. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Evan John Wilkins.
John’s last great adventure was a bear hunt in May 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations will go to establish “Bears 4 ALS,” a memorial foundation to provide bear hunts for others diagnosed with ALS. Donations may be sent to:
