Jane Ferril

Jane Adams Ferril passed away the morning of Sunday, 7 January 2024, in her home in Sheridan. It was important to her to be in familiar surroundings and a place, she could still observe the deer, pheasants, rabbits, and squirrels that visited her backyard. She had another request: “keep the obituary short!”
Jane was the daughter of a railway officer, born in Oklahoma, but spent her formative years in the South as a proud Alabaman. While attending the University of Missouri in Kansas City, she met and married Robert Ferril. Later, with two daughters in tow, the Ferrils moved to Wyoming—first in Cheyenne, then Buffalo, and finally settling in Sheridan. Both became pillars of this community. Jane was a natural organizer and an ardent champion of bylaws. She held several officerships, including as President of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Wyoming, where among other accomplishments she was instrumental in the placement, preservation, and sustainment of a Sheridan landmark–the Mandel Cabin. She loved singing, dancing, playing poker, and being correct. She had a talent for horticulture, and you can visit her floral transplants in Jane’s Garden at the Brinton Museum. For that institution, she helped inaugurate their summer Gala fundraiser, serving as Committee Chair for the first few renditions. She also amassed many hours of volunteer work at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Her impacts are seen, felt, and continue all over.
She was a grand lady and will be sorely missed by her far-flung family. She requested no funeral, but a small, private gathering will be held later this year. In place of flowers and cards, she asked that donations be made to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801. Online condolences may be made to www.sheridanfuneral.com. Arrangements are under the care of Sheridan Funeral Home.
