John Driskill

Funeral Services for John Driskill 70-year-old lifetime Buffalo resident who passed away Saturday at the St. Vincent’s Health Care Center in Billings, Montana will be held Saturday, August 19th at the Summit Wesleyan Church in Buffalo with Pastor Randy Gardner officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Johnson County High School FFA Chapter at 29891 Old Hwy 87. John Gordon Driskill was born March 22, 1953, in Buffalo, Wyoming to John W. and Tressa Driskill. He grew up and went to school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School with the class of 1971. After high school, he attended the University of Wyoming for two years where he studied Agriculture. In 1972 he moved back to Wyoming and went to work for the Russ Miller Ranch in Clearmont. He later worked for the Marton Ranch. John took a job with the Johnson County YMCA as head of their maintenance and was promoted to assistant executive director and later hired as the Executive Director of the Y, positions he held for fifteen years. John returned to the University of Wyoming where he received both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. In 2003 he moved to Farmington, New Mexico, and took a position at San Juan College and was the Safety Instructor for the College of Energy. He was married on September 17, 2005, in Farmington to Tammy Portell and they made their home in Farmington. In October of 2007 they moved back to Buffalo and John was the Safety Instructor for Pearl Development. In 2009 John went to work for Johnson County School District #1 as a bus driver and drove a route for a short time before driving for activities only. John continued to drive the school bus until October of 2022 when surgery forced him to retire. He and Tammy continued living in Buffalo until his death.
An avid soccer fan and licensed referee he organized and helped supervise the Buffalo Youth Soccer League for many years, assisted in coaching Buffalo Blast Soccer, and later served as the Buffalo High School Boys Head Soccer Coach for three years. John was very active in Johnson County Agriculture and was instrumental in implementing the Johnson County Wool Show. He was passionate about the sheep industry and was elected Region II representative to the Wyoming Wool Grower’s Board. He was a trained farrier with 45 years of experience. He loved rodeo and with John Gibbs was the 1978 Team Roping Champion at the Johnson County Fair.
He is survived by his wife Tammy Driskill of Buffalo; two sons, Wiley Driskill and his wife Katie of Fresno, California, and Cole Bingham and his wife Jessica of La Plata, Colorado; three daughters Tara Murphree and her husband Derek of Bentonville, Arkansas, Brenda Hayes and her husband Gentry of Gillette, Wyoming and Brooke “Darby” Goodson and her husband Brett of Buffalo; two brothers Bill Driskill and his wife Theresa of Parker, Colorado and Arlen Rounds of Cheyenne, Wyoming and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Dorothy O’Brien.
