Dorothy Elizabeth Hanson was born on April 17, 1933, in Fremont, Nebraska to Delbert and Opal Jones. She grew up and went to school in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque High school. During her high school years, she often worked at her parent’s business, The Southwest Teacher’s Agency. She learned to run the business, taking over whenever her mom, who suffered from arthritis, was unable to work. After high school, she attended college in Denver. She met her husband of 61 years, George Hanson, on a blind date while he was stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico and they were married in February of 1954.
When the family moved to Cocoa, Florida for George’s engineering work on the Apollo space flight missions, Dorothy raised the family and did volunteer work as a nurse’s aide in the elementary school that the kids attended. She then got her cosmetology license and became a hairdresser. Dorothy was a great mom, and she built a strong and loving family. She was also an amazingly strong person, who over the last 30 years survived 3 onsets of cancer, heart surgery, a pacemaker, lymphedema, and ultimately a brain tumor. Through all of this, she remained steadfast in her faith and did volunteer work with the Pink Ladies to raise funds for cancer awareness.

She had a deeply rooted faith in God and was an active and supportive member of Grace Fellowship Church in Buffalo.
Dorothy was a creative person who enjoyed painting and quilting. She made exceptionally beautiful quilts for every member of her family and many friends.

The family wishes to send their heartfelt thanks to everyone in Buffalo who has been such a support to our mother in her life and during her illness and to us in her death.
She is survived by one daughter Cheryl and her husband Roary Murray of Lancaster, California; two sons, Jeffrey Hanson and his wife Deborah also of Lancaster, and Clinton Hanson and his partner, Tim Plunkett of Woodland Hills, California; one sister Charlotte Moritomo of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Christopher, Tiffany, and Rachel and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Josiah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, and one brother, Clinton Jones.
