According to the Office of Homeland Security, Wyoming search and rescue personnel conduct an average of more than 300 missions annually across the state for those who become lost or stranded.
The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office is promoting a new radio channel that will aid search and rescue efforts.
The Be 307 Aware campaign aims to inform residents and visitors alike, that the service is available to anyone who takes a handheld radio with them while hunting or recreating.
Sheridan County Undersheriff Levi Domiguez told listeners about this new lifesaving service while appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program.
According to Dominguez, an FRS/GMRS capable radio or walkie talkie is capable of picking up the signal. Users need to program the 307 channel into their radio. Program to UHF 462.6125 Privacy Code 85.4 or Channel 3 and Privacy code 07 (307).
Should the user become lost or injured, this channel will be utilized by SAR responders. The hope is the lost individual will be able to communicate with responders on location, safety and health conditions.
Domiguez told listeners that if they don’t already own one, it is a good idea to purchase and keep one of these hand held radios on their person, just in case.
The 307 radio service is supported by the Wyoming State Search and Rescue Council, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security, and Wyoming Sheriff’s Association.
