Most spring semester college courses within the Northern Wyoming Community College District start this coming Monday and an early look at headcount numbers show that there will be almost the same number of students at the District’s 3 campuses, compared to this time last year.
Headcount numbers represent the number of total students in classes for the semester, but each student is only counted once if they are enrolled in multiple classes.
Overall headcount numbers for the spring 2022 semester are down by 10 compared to spring 2021.
So far, Sheridan College’s headcount numbers are down by 2, while Gillette College is down by 41.
The Johnson County campus numbers are more than doubled from last year, with 65 students.
For the 2021-2022 academic year, the average age of enrolled college students is 19 for Sheridan, 21 for Gillette, and 17 for the Johnson County campus.
District President Doctor Walter Tribley says the Gillette area has a wider range of jobs, thus they are more likely to have older students take classes to get those jobs, and it doesn’t take much for the average student age to move up or down.
“We have more people that are going to Gillette College to get mine safety training and other types of training, short term to get to work. If you and I go, we’re going to skew that age up and we’re going to go in for a 1-credit safety class, to go to work. So there’s more of that kind of training there.”
The academic year for the District starts with the summer semester, and ends with the spring semester of the next calendar year.
