Johnson County Cemetery Board Addresses Rumors

The Johnson County Cemetery District Board met Tuesday afternoon and chairman Jon Zorbas wanted to address a number of rumors that have circulated in the community before the board entered into their regular meeting.

Zorbas said there have been questions raised about the amount of money the district has in reserves and why.

Zorbas said $400,000 for capital improvements is not a lot of money considering the cost of those improvements that have been made at the cemetery in recent years.

Another rumor that was addressed was that the district board does not allow funeral homes to collect fees on their behalf, which he said was not the case.

There is no policy that requires families to get permission for burials. The reason they ask to be contacted is to avoid having multiple burials scheduled on top of each other, according to Zorbas.

He added that the additional Saturday fees were not designed to punish anyone, but to cover costs for Saturday burials.
