Three years ago, City of Sheridan landfill cells T6, T7 and T8 that are located directly east of the landfill’s active Cell 9, were filled and have been waiting for closure activities since that time. The Sheridan City Council recently awarded  the Landfill Final Closure Project to Earth Work Solutions in the amount of $5.24 million. City Utilities Director Dan Roberts said the bid came in $950,000 over the engineer’s estimate.

The landfill cell closures are in accordance with Wyoming’s Solid Waste Rules and Regulations. According to information from the City of Sheridan, closing a landfill cell essentially requires designing and constructing a system over a landfill cell that prevents water from entering in. Additionally, it requires putting systems in place for the protection and monitoring of surrounding groundwater to ensure that contamination is not occurring in the future.
