October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. This is a month-long opportunity to take the time to become aware of the realities of domestic violence in the Sheridan area, and then take action to do something about it. It is also a time dedicated to the survivors of domestic violence and in honor of those who lost their lives because of domestic violence.

In the United States, over 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually. Based on reports by the International Rescue Committee, one in four women and one in ten men will experience domestic violence in their lives. On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive over 19,000 calls.

The Advocacy Center of Sheridan will be holding their annual March Against Family Violence on Oct. 9. The march is a show of unity among Sheridan County residents against domestic violence, according to the Advocacy Center Assistant Director Rhonda Weber.

At the end of the march, the participants will come together and celebrate this year’s Advocacy in Action Award recipient. While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Advocacy Center Executive Director Yvonne Swanson told listeners a little about this year’s recipient.
