A local non-profit continues their mission of feeding hungry children in the community. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Combating Food Scarcity and Food Insecurity

The Food Group in Sheridan was formed in 2010 with the goal to eliminate childhood hunger in Sheridan County. Executive Director of The Food Group, Keri McMeans provided an update to the Sheridan City Council and Mayor Rich Bridger at Monday night’s Council meeting. McMeans says they continue to combat food scarcity and food insecurity.

McMeans said about 42 percent of children in Sheridan County rely on free and reduced meals while they are at school, so by providing food for children, The Food Group gives students an opportunity to come back to school Monday morning ready to learn, rather than ready to eat.

McMeans also provided specifics about their newest program.

The Food Group will be holding two “Fill the Bus” events where people can donate needed food items. The first will be this upcoming Saturday in the Albertson’s parking lot from 10 am to 2 pm and the second will be Saturday, October 2 in the Ridley’s parking lot, also from 10 am to 2 pm. Cash donations will also be accepted at both events. A list of needed food items can be found here.
