Johnson County Takes No Action on Land Sale

Published

Johnson County’s Commissioners decided to take no action concerning the possible sale of private lands to the US Forest Service/Bighorn National Forest.

Powder River District Ranger Traci Weaver came before the commission at their recent meeting to ask for a letter of support for the district’s Land, Water, and Conservation funding request to purchase the lands for public recreation.

She explained that there is a 100-acre parcel along US Highway 16 west of Buffalo owned by Wayne Jones that he has offered to the Forest Service.

She discussed the proposal with the commission.

Some landowners in the area spoke in opposition to the land sale to the USFS.

The commission decided they should not get involved in private land matters and chose not to endorse nor condemn the sale, and not to issue a letter of support in the matter.
