JCSD1 Experiencing Shortage of Bus Drivers
The Johnson County School District is facing a shortage of bus drivers and subsequently has had no choice but to suspend bus routes within the city to prioritize those for students in rural areas.
Contributing factors to the problem, according to District Transportation Director Dennis Zezas, range from drivers recently retiring to lack of interest and concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some parents in the district were upset that the transportation department waited so long before announcing the Buffalo routes would be suspended.
Zezas explains the situation further.
Although the district has a shortage of bus drivers, they continue to try to recruit.
Zezas said that there are some tests, background and health screens that need to be performed for all prospective drivers, but the district will help those interested to get them done.
We will look at those requirements in an upcoming story.
For those that may be interested in driving for the district, contact Dennis Zezas.
