Adopting an animal is an exciting time; picking the right animal for you and your family takes patience and no small amount of commitment. But what happens if after the “meet and greet” and the adoption process not everyone adjusts well after getting home?

The Sheridan County Dog and Cat Shelter allows those adopting pets up to two weeks to decide if the animal they have chosen is a good addition to the family.

The program allows residents the opportunity to take pets home for a two week trial, allowing the animal time to adjust to their new setting and family. If anyone in the family isn’t adjusting well, the pet can be taken back to the shelter to wait for the right person or family to come along while the returning party can choose another animal to take home.

The program offers not only the opportunity to find the right pet for residents and their families, but also great information for the shelter on the returning animal, Dog and Cat Shelter director Jill Moriarty said.

If the animal didn’t fit in with the family, shelter staff asks those returning the animals why the fit didn’t work. This information has proven invaluable, Moriarty said.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Moriarty said the new two week trial period benefits everyone involved, especially the animal.
