Wyoming Highway Patrol is warning drivers that while roads remain mostly clear due to a lack of snowfall in northern Wyoming, high winds continue to create hazardous driving conditions across the region.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Louis Tegdesch said strong winds have proven especially dangerous for high-clearance vehicles pulling trailers. Tegdesch said speed plays a major role in rollover crashes and recommends slowing down when high-speed gusts begin to cause a vehicle to wobble. He advises drivers to keep both hands on the wheel, maintain positive control of the vehicle and leave plenty of space between themselves and other motorists.

Tegdesch urged drivers to obey posted speed limits and remain alert to changing conditions. When conditions become dangerous, speed limits can be reduced, and drivers are expected to observe warnings and road restrictions displayed on WYDOT overhead amber signs. In some cases, ignoring those restrictions can result in citations.

Despite the wind, Tegdesch said the unusually dry winter has provided improved driving conditions overall. During more typical winter months, troopers often spend much of their time responding to crashes, but the minimal snowfall this season has allowed them to focus on more proactive patrol duties along Wyoming interstates.

Tegdesch also reminded drivers to buckle up and noted that marijuana remains illegal in Wyoming, advising visitors from states where it is legal to leave it at home. He encouraged motorists to continue checking weather forecasts and road condition updates before traveling, especially when high winds are in the forecast.
