Sheridan police responded to an armed woman threatening self-harm at the 400 block of North Brooks street in Sheridan, at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 8.

Upon arrival, Sheridan police set up a secured perimeter of the area, taking precautions for both the community and officers, according to Sheridan police lieutenant Travis Koltiska.

Mental health providers from Northern Wyoming Mental Health arrived on the scene and were able to de-escalate the situation.

No arrests were made and the woman was not taken into custody under Title 25. The woman voluntarily surrendered her handgun to the Sheridan PD “for safe keeping” Koltiska said.

Photos of the officers securing the perimeter quickly surfaced on social media, leading some to speculate as to the reasoning behind police having weapons drawn.

The altercation lasted approximately 35 minutes. The woman is being treated by Northern Wyoming Mental Health.
