The Wyoming Game and Fish Department Sheridan Region Office is alerting the public that Black bears in the Sheridan Region are active and residents should take action now to prevent potential conflicts.

A large majority of Sheridan County is bear habitat and communities such as Story, Big Horn and Dayton have bears visiting residential areas almost every year. However, if attractants are unavailable, most bears will choose to leave on their own to search for food opportunities elsewhere.

To prevent conflicts, please keep all attractants secure and out of the reach of bears, including garbage, outside pet food, livestock grain, barbecue grills and backyard domestic livestock. Find more tips and techniques to prevent conflicts by clicking here

Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt, suggested taking a few steps to ensure that domestic animals and their feed are also protected from bears.

The Game and Fish is also alerting the public to a Bighorn National Forest special order requiring campers and other visitors to the forest to secure food and other attractants out of the reach of bears and other wildlife. Find that special order here.
