Sheridan Man Arraigned on Six Charges in District Court

At the arraignment hearing, Stefan Gunter pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and battery, both felonies, one count of felony possession of a controlled substance – liquid methamphetamine, one count of misdemeanor theft, one count of misdemeanor property destruction and one count of misdemeanor reckless endangering. District Court Judge Darci Phillips scheduled trial for January 21, 2025 and set the pretrial conference for December 19 at 10:30 am. A request to lower Gunter’s bond amount was denied by the Court.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident on May 31, 2024 at a residence in Sheridan where Gunter allegedly poured lighter fluid on a couple while they were sleeping in bed. Gunter threatened to light them on fire with a lighter and threatened bodily harm to the individuals with a machete and a baseball bat. Gunter also stole the cellular phones of the two individuals and placed them in the freezer so that they could not call 9-11 and destroyed the bedding with the machete. If convicted on all counts, Gunter faces up to 29 years in prison and fines of over $37,000.
