While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan Police Department Captain Tom Ringley alerted the community to open positions at the SPD.

The SPD is looking to fill a few open officer positions. Applicants must be able to pass a physical fitness assessment, a written exam, an oral board, a pre-employment background investigation, a psychological assessment and a polygraph.

The department prides itself on being very selective when choosing applicants to become officers. Both the Captain and SPD Chief Travis Koltiska often speak on the importance of character within the department’s ranks. Together, the Chief and Captain have over four decades of experience patrolling Sheridan’s streets.

During his appearance, Captain Ringley said the department would rather keep potions open than hire the wrong candidate. Since 2023, the SPD has hired only three of 16 candidates. The high standards at the SPD have been solidified within the culture at the department, which Ringley said, isn’t for everyone.

One of the first steps a potential candidate may take to becoming an officer would be to explore the SPD website. The Captain also suggested taking a ride along with an officer as no topic is off limits and SPD officers are encouraged to speak candidly regarding their experience serving on the force.

For those who meet requirements and possess the character traits sought by the SPD, Ringley said the department will work with them to ensure their training and career needs are met, such as eventually working to become a detective, earning a leadership position on patrol, or a School Resource Officer working to safeguard Sheridan schools.

The SPD performs testing on the third Thursday of each month. Candidates who pass the initial test, meet with a background investigator the day after testing on Fridays.
