The Sheridan Police Department has announced that on the afternoon of June 13, 2024, the SPD learned of a new scam attempt.
According to the department, at least two Sheridan residents received phone calls threatening legal and/or civil action because they had failed to appear in the Circuit Court in Sheridan County.
The scam caller demanded payment. The Sheridan residents did not fall prey to the scam and contacted the court to confirm they did not have any active warrants or any scheduled appearances.
The calls appeared to originate from a Casper number. The full number is currently not available and SPD suspects it may have been “spoofed”.
The SPD would like the public to be aware that no one will receive a phone call from the courts or law enforcement demanding money or funds. As a matter of officer safety, among other reasons, law enforcement will not let people know if they have a warrant. The SPD states that most people know whether or not they have or have missed a court date.
If you think you are the target of this scam, or any other scam, call the SPD investigators at (307)672-2413.
