In 2010, by presidential proclamation, President Barack Obama declared January “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month” and every year since, each president has followed this tradition.
The month gives the nation an opportunity to educate themselves on the issues of human trafficking and a time to listen to and empower victims.
Although many organizations are working diligently to care for victims, Uprising is working to get ahead of the problem. Uprising is a nonprofit based in Sheridan. Co-Founder and Executive Director Terri Markham and her team work to empower communities, volunteers, and donors to confront human trafficking and exploitation through awareness, education and outreach.

Many may believe human sex trafficking is exclusively linked to large scale criminal organizations or transportation type operations. But according to Markham, this type of trafficking occurs more often on a small scale with some victims not even recognising what is happening to them.

Through education and awareness, Markham and her team hope to help others recognize the realities of human sex trafficking and prevent others from falling prey to the crime.
When asked how people can help Uprising, Markahm said education is key. Uprising stands ready to book appearances and help to educate the community. Uprising is also taking part in Black Tooth Bingo this month.
