District Court News

A 43-year-old Sheridan man was arraigned in District Court for two felony sexual assault charges. Michael Shreeve pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault in the first degree. The alleged crimes occurred July 1 and July 2 of this year at a residence in Sheridan County. District Court Judge Darci Phillips scheduled a four-day #1 stack jury trial to begin on Monday, May 6, 2024. A pretrial conference will take place April 9 at 9 am.

Each count of sexual assault in the first degree is punishable by not less than five and not more than 50 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Shreeve’s bond was continued under the same terms and conditions that were previously set in Circuit Court.

Also arraigned Tuesday was 18-year-old Payton Jack of Sheridan. Jack pleaded not guilty to one count of felony theft for allegedly taking money from a safe at a residence in Sheridan on October 15, 2023. The amount stolen was greater than $1,000, which is why the case is being prosecuted as a felony. Judge Phillips set a #3 stack three-day jury trial for April 15, 2024. A pretrial conference will take place on March 19 at 10 am. Felony theft is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

More from District Court:

A sentencing hearing was held for 53-year-old William Manley, who on April 26, 2023, was charged with one count of felony drug possession for being in possession of more than three grams of methamphetamine. Manley was arrested after Police with the Sheridan VA Medical Center confiscated approximately 12 grams of methamphetamine from his room at the VA.

Judge Phillips said that while she appreciated the work that Manley has put in to rehabilitate himself since his arrest in April, she could not ignore his criminal record that includes seven previous felony convictions and 15 misdemeanor convictions. Phillips sentenced Manley to 1 ½ to 4 years in prison and ordered him to pay $375 in court costs and assessments. Due to the prison sentence, the $500 public defender fee was not imposed by the Court.
