The Johnson County Historical Society will offer “Bones and Bullets: an 1880’s US Cavalry Training Camp in the Western Powder River Basin,” a history presentation Monday evening, November 13 at the Johnson County Library.

Cody Newton is an archaeologist with over 20 years experience working in both academia and cultural resource management, who holds a Ph.D. In Anthropology from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

He will be giving the presentation for the historical society, discussing an 1880’s US Cavalry training camp in the western Powder River Basin, about seven miles southwest of Fort McKinney near Buffalo.

A metal detecting survey of the site has uncovered fired military cartridges and other metal artifacts, and excavations within the site have found butchered bone from a variety of domesticated and wild animals.

The presentation will discuss the findings at the site and what they show concerning the state of US Cavalry soldiers on exercise during the period.

The discussion is scheduled for tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Johnson County Library’s Twing Room.

The public is invited to attend the free event.
