Sheridan College Fall Semester enrollment numbers show that more students are enrolling at the Sheridan and Johnson County Campus, but some are not taking as many courses as before.

New numbers from the college show that from the start of fall semester 2022 to the start of fall semester 2023, headcount numbers are up by about 1-percent in Sheridan County (up 16 students from 1,314 to 1,326) and about 15% in Johnson County (up 15 students from 98 to 113).

Headcount numbers are those students who are enrolled in a minimum of 1 class and are not counted again if enrolled in multiple classes.

As for full-term enrollment numbers, where the headcount numbers count for each class a student is enrolled in, those numbers are down by about 5% in Sheridan (down 56 students from 1,100 to 1,044) and almost 13% in Johnson County (down 6 students from 45 to 39).

College President Dr. Walter Tribley says those percentage numbers are within the margin of error range, thus the percentage change numbers don’t matter much, however there is a statewide and nationwide decline.

On the flip side there has been an increase of full-term enrolled students using digital and distance learning.

As for the Northern Wyoming Community College District, which includes Gillette College, headcount numbers are down 3.6% (down from 2,387 to 2,300) and full-term enrollment is down 6% (down from 2,002 to 1882).

That means the numbers from Gillette are down, and since Gillette College has not yet received accreditation as its own college district, the numbers from there still have to count within the Northern Wyoming Community College District’s numbers.

Dr. Tribley says the numbers decrease was expected and explains more as to why that is.

Dr. Walter Tribley

“The main driver of any loss of enrollment that we’re seeing in Gillette, has to do with the mind safety training that we used to offer there for credit and since offering those types of classes for credit does not benefit the Gillette College District, they have stopped offering them as credit and they’re offering them for non-credit.”

Although the various enrollment numbers from fall 2022 didn’t change much in fall 2023, there is still some increase from 2021, which is when students started to come back from the covid pandemic.

Headcount numbers from Johnson County are almost double compared to where they were 2 years ago (57 in 2021 vs. 113 in 2023).
