Aaron PalmerA proposal from parents and coaches in Kaycee to allow 5th grade boys to participate in junior high football was denied by the Johnson County School Board.
The proposal was asking to allow fifth graders to play on the junior high team due to small class sizes in this year’s 7th and 8th grade classes.
They said the proposal would be for one year only if allowed.
Kaycee has 5 students in 6th through 8th grade that want to play football but they need more players for 6-man football.
According to the proposal, Ten Sleep and Riverside will be allowing their 5th graders to participate this year.
Many on the board expressed concerns with allowing smaller 5th graders to play with bigger, older kids, saying football is a contact sport and injuries to the smaller kids could be an issue.
After discussions, the board ultimately voted the proposal down.
