The Lagniappe (pronounced ‘Lan-Yap’) Center is a new employment skills and community development initiative located in Sheridan.
Crystal Merriam, founder and executive director of the Lagniappe Center, appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the mission of the center.
Employees of the center sew pet beds from the scrap foam from Kennon Products and discontinued fabric samples from Carroll’s Furniture as well as tote bags utilizing scrap canvas from Sheridan Tent & Awning.
While 60% of the work hours involve creating the products to be sold, 40% of the employee’s work schedule involves taking courses that will improve employment opportunities. These courses included, financial literacy, nutrition and cooking classes, job search mentoring and other support that results in employment such as General Education Development (GED) preparation.
Throughout all training, the Lagniappe Center pays $18.50 per hour for a 35-37 hour work week.
Merriam told listeners her experiences working for other nonprofits and lack of non-government funded programs inspired her to found the Lagniappe Center.
