Ucross is honored to announce that they are partnering with the Denver Art Museum to present the Ucross Symposium: Curating Native American Art, an interdisciplinary gathering of museum professionals, students, and community members on June 12 and 13.

The Ucross Symposium is the public culmination of the Native American Art Curatorial Convening (NAACC), a historic gathering of many of the nation’s leading curators of Native art. Supported in part by funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation of Visual Arts, Ucross hosted the first two private sessions in June 2021 and June 2022, where the group explored Indigenous representation in museums, the development of new standards and practices for working with Native and First Nations collections and communities, and how to create new pathways supporting colleagues in the field.

The discussion will continue at the Ucross Symposium. Speakers and NAACC members include: Jill Ahlberg Yohe, Associate Curator of Native American Art at Minneapolis Institute of Art; heather ahtone (Choctaw/Chickasaw Nation), Director of Curatorial Affairs at First Americans Museum; Kathleen Ash-Milby (Navajo Nation), Curator of Native American Art at Portland Art Museum; Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse, Director of Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Native Art, Curator of Northwest Native Art at Burke Museum, and Associate Professor of Native Art at University of Washington; Christina E. Burke, Independent Curator, Burke & Associates Curatorial; Karen Kramer, Curator of Native American and Oceanic Art and Culture and Director of Native American Fellowship Program at Peabody Essex Museum; John P. Lukavic, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Native Arts at the Denver Art Museum; Jami Powell (Osage Nation), Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs at Hood Museum of Art and Dartmouth College.

The Symposium will be held in the Denver Art Museum’s Martin Building, Level 2 — South Sturm Pavilion.

Tickets are $100 for established museum professionals (5+ years in the field) and $25 for aspiring or emerging curators (0-4 years in the field). All ticket prices include breakfast on both days and lunch on the first day of the symposium, as well as access to the workshops on Tuesday, June 13. Tickets are required.
