Although it has existed in some form since 1963, AmeriCorps was formed in 1993. An independent agency of the US Government, the organization enrolls more than 200,000 individuals to serve organizations making a difference in communities across America.

Recently a team of AmeriCorps volunteers have been giving their time to 501(c)3 organizations throughout Sheridan County, including Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns.

Max Beshara is a volunteer with AmeriCorps. He serves as the media specialist with the group of volunteers who have been working in Sheridan. He told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse that after a few semesters at college, he couldn’t decide what he wanted to do for a career. So, Beshara took some time off from higher education and decided to work for AmeriCorps, to see the county and earn some funds for his eventual return to college.

According to AmeriCorps, after a volunteer’s term of service and enrolling in the National Service Trust, they are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

Dan Alsup with Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns has been working with the group for the past several weeks, and said they are a hard working team.

Some of those nonprofits include the Sheridan Community Land Trust, The Food Group and Second Hand Blessings.
