Brooks project update

Sheridan County Commissioner Chair Christi Haswell gave residents an update on the construction project to transform the space once used as Brooks Street into a public area.

The approximate 14% grade of Brooks Street often caused problems and was closed by officials during the winter months to prevent accidents. The street was permanently closed in 2019 after an accident involving a pedestrian. Due to these traffic safety concerns, Sheridan County requested the City of Sheridan vacate South Brooks Street between West Whitney Street and West Burkitt Street, adjacent to the Sheridan County Courthouse.

With the council’s approval, the decision was ultimately made by the board of commissioners to transform a portion of the street into a public greenspace. After almost three years of planning work has begun.
