Gate Runners Causing Problems With Reopening Wyoming Highways

Not only has it been difficult to clear the snow and open various highways in southern Wyoming, snowplow crews and other emergency personnel have had a busy time dealing with motorists traveling into places where they shouldn’t be going.

A few days ago, a motorist had to be rescued after getting his vehicle stuck in a snow drift on the South Pass Highway when the road was closed.

There was another incident where motorists tried to detour on county roads southwest of Casper, to get around a closed section of road, and got stuck as well.

Jason Roascio of the Wyoming Highway Patrol says those who live within a road closure area are usually allowed to enter, provided road conditions are good between the closure gate and where they live, however any motorist must have permission from the Patrol before they can enter.

He adds getting stuck within a closed area only makes matters worse.

“When someone goes around a road closure, it can interfere with the operations to get the highway back open, whether it be snow removal, there’s a crash ahead or even a hazardous material spill. We’re going to have to initiate an emergency response crew other than the highway department. We’re talking about search and rescue. It’s going to take them time to mobilize. They’re going to have to get equipment that can get through a blizzard and that’s going to take time, while you’re stranded.”

The fine for entering a closed section of highway is $750.

A bill that would’ve doubled that fine died in the legislature earlier this year.
