A big journey in small steps

Many people begin their new year with resolutions to improve themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. The new year is a starting point in time, but what about the actions, where should it begin?
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan Memorial Hospital Outpatient Dialysis Dietitian and Diabetes Educator Jordan McCoy and dietetic intern Laura Wagner, spoke on their experiences and of working with residents who have had to change their diets due to an underlying health problem, such as diabetes.
McCoy acknowledged the struggle many experience when taking the initiative to change their dietary habits. But if one has the determination and the means to begin the journey, even before hitting the gym, the first step should take place in the kitchen, according to McCoy.
McCoy acknowledged the difficulty many people can experience when attempting to change their diets. She suggested making little changes. Although on average more time consuming and a more expensive option, preparing meals with nutrient rich whole foods is a good place to start.
McCoy is not suggesting that we throw out processed foods and spend the next paycheck on nothing but whole foods. But taking small steps and committing to little changes can make a big difference.
