Buffalo’s City Council approved a proclamation by Mayor Shane Schrader urging residents to observe Operation Green Light November 7 through 11 for Veterans Week in Buffalo.

Bill Hawley, with the Suicide Prevention Coalition, explained the reason for the city and county proclamations.

Jerry Osbourne, President of the coalition and a Viet Nam Veteran, said the fact that veterans are committing suicide in large numbers is sad, and wanted to make more people aware of the issue and have discussions to try to bring those numbers down.

According to information from the coalition, city and county buildings will be illuminated green November 7 to 13 as part of Operation Green Light, a new national collaborative initiative to support military veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
