The Wyoming Department of Transportation Commission recently awarded a $647,000 contract to Advanced Electrical Contracting, Inc. of Sheridan to upgrade a traffic signal on Coffeen Avenue. Funds for the project came from the Highway Safety Improvement Program. Work on the signal located at Coffeen Avenue and Lowell Street, which is a non-typical five-way intersection, will begin Monday, August 15. According to information from WYDOT, the intent of the project is to perform a complete upgrade of the traffic signal system, while also adjusting the timing and increasing detection capabilities of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

These upgrades will increase the safety and functionality of the non-typical intersection. The sidewalk corners will also be upgraded to meet current pedestrian ADA requirements. Traffic control will vary depending on the location and nature of the work taking place.  A minimum of 2-way, uninterrupted traffic flow on Coffeen Avenue will be maintained for the duration of the project. The current signal will remain operational while the new system is installed and activated. The contract completion date is June 30, 2023.

How about upgrading the traffic signal at Coffeen and Sheridan Avenue? More accidents happen there during the course of the year. The upgrade will allow persons turning left from Coffeen to Sheridan Avenue the opportunity to make their turn safely.

I have railed against that intersection for years. It gas been so commonplace to see several vehicles from both sides of Coffeen go careening after their signal has gone red. It finally became evident to me that it would take a multiple victim tragedy to occur before that intersection got the attention it needs.
