Sheridan College Soon To Have Kiln For Student, Community And Regional Use

There will be a hot time soon in the oven at Sheridan College, but it won’t be cooking any food.

Construction is underway of a new 2-chamber ceramic wood kiln that will be used for hardening and drying various pieces of pottery.

The kiln is located on the southeast corner of the campus and when it’s in use, the temperature inside can reach up to 24-hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

Stephen Mullins is the project manager and owner of the kiln.

He says Wyoming doesn’t have much in the way of kilns in an educational sense and although it’s on college property, the college won’t be the only one to benefit from it.

“One, have it be educational and tie in with the college. The goal is to bring from all corners of the state, professionals, amateurs, students, so it’s like a community building project, with the end result being a beautiful fired piece of pottery.”

Mullins adds he hopes to do some small test fires in August, and a larger test in October.
