The $22.7 million tax settlement between Johnson County and Carbon Creek/US Realm is good news for the county’s special districts, but that does not appear to be the case with the Johnson County School District.

At the recent district board meeting in Kaycee, Superintendent Charles Auzqui explained that the funds that will eventually be allocated the the school district will need to be returned to the state.

Auzqui said he will be requesting some of that money back from the state to reimburse the district for their lost Pre-1997, or general cash reserve monies, but he did say getting them was not a given.

Auzqui was asked if the chances of those funds being returned to the district were slim, and he said, “yes, but we’re gonna fight for them. I’m not guaranteeing we will get them, but we’re going to ask for them.”
